Matt Thompson (Zoltan/Rashomon) follows up 2014's excellent 'Clear Air Turbulence' with five tracks of further trademark vintage synth experiments. Somewhat darker and less melodic than its predecessor, the album carries a sense of genuine unease (and at times, outright dread), such as when the severe Kraut-esque arpeggio of 'Electronic Phase 2' intersects with a rumbling, doom-laden bassline, plunging the track into a pitch-black vortex. Side 2 is entirely taken up by '18 Phases Of Electronic Music', shifting the sonic experimentation into Radiophonic territory: indeed, fans of Gil Mellé's soundtrack to 'The Andromeda Strain' will find much joy within the shocking screeds of white noise and ring-modulated tones held within. It's a thrilling climax to a soundtrack for a 1960s science experiment gone horribly wrong...
